Study Abroad Travel Tips

Everything I learned from spending weekdays in London and every weekend somewhere new.

What I Wish I Knew Before Studying Abroad

From ghost tours in Edinburgh to ferries around Puffin Island, these tips come straight from the moments that made my semester abroad unforgettable.

Whether I was walking the Barbican in Plymouth, climbing hills in Edinburgh, or exploring beach towns in Wales, one simple packing system worked for every trip.

  • Neutral layers (perfect for UK weather swings)
  • Comfortable shoes — cobblestones + hills = trust me
  • A reusable tote for markets & pastries
  • Portable charger & universal adapter
  • A backpack that fits Ryanair’s personal-item size

Roll everything, and keep one “nice outfit” for those spontaneous dinners.

Studying in London is expensive — but leaving London can be surprisingly cheap. Some of my favorite places (like Llandudno, Conwy, and Plymouth) were the most budget-friendly.

  • Use Skyscanner → Everywhere for low-cost flight ideas
  • Book National Rail trains early for big savings
  • Stay in hostels — like a&o Hostel in Edinburgh
  • Walk everywhere once you arrive — especially in Paris
  • Buy snacks from grocery stores instead of airports

The best discoveries often came from short, simple, inexpensive trips.

From tiny Welsh towns to big cities, the best travel moments came from slowing down and noticing how locals lived.

  • Learn a few small phrases — it goes a long way
  • Match the local “volume” (UK & France = quieter!)
  • Choose small cafés & local markets over chains
  • Be patient — ferries, buses, and trains run on their own rhythm
  • Ask questions — people love to share their home with you

Travel feels different when you treat each place like someone’s home — because it is.

Transportation became part of the fun — from London Tube rides to ferries in Wales and coastal walks in Plymouth.

  • Citymapper for London (more accurate than Google Maps)
  • Download offline maps for Paris, Palma, etc.
  • Double-check airport names — some are hours away
  • Try ferries when you can: Puffin Island & Plymouth ferries were highlights
  • Give yourself buffer time, especially in rural areas

The smoother your travel, the more you enjoy the day.
